The Long Game: ‘Sustain’

The Long Game: ‘Sustain’

On today’s podcast, we’ll be talking about the long game of the 5S Methodology – sustaining.

So – stay tuned.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we’re on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you’re a seasoned Podcast Listener, this podcast will be different from most you listen to.  It’s based on exactly what the name implies – Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy – we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way – let’s get to the Podcast!

The Long Game: ‘Sustain’

With the groundwork laid through sorting, setting in order, shining, and standardizing, we arrive at the essential final official ‘S’ in the 5S Methodology: ‘Sustain.’

Sustainability is where the long game is played, ensuring that the efforts invested in the first four stages continue to pay dividends in safety and efficiency.

As we always try to point out – this list isn’t the end all be all steps to achieve sustainability – but it IS a great place to start! Be sure to follow your specific facility rules and regulations. With that said – here you go.

  1. Creating a Culture of Cleanliness: ‘Sustain’ is about embedding the 5S principles into the company culture. It’s about ensuring that maintaining an organized, clean, and efficient workspace becomes second nature to every team member.
  2. Continuous Improvement: The journey to excellence is never-ending. ‘Sustain’ involves regularly reviewing and refining processes. It’s a commitment to constant improvement and adaptation to new challenges and opportunities.
  3. Regular Training and Refreshers: Regular training sessions and refreshers are essential to ‘Sustain’ the established processes. They help new employees get up to speed and remind veterans of the importance of 5S in their daily work.
  4. Performance Metrics: What gets measured gets managed. Establish clear, actionable metrics to gauge the effectiveness of your 5S implementation. Regularly review these metrics to celebrate successes and identify areas for improvement.
  5. Leadership and Support: Finally, ‘Sustain’ requires unwavering support from leadership. Leaders should exemplify the 5S methodology in their actions and decisions, providing the support and resources necessary to maintain the standards.

‘Sustain’ is not simply about maintaining the status quo; it’s about cultivating an environment where safety and orderliness are part of the identity of your workspace. The commitment to maintaining discipline and processes keeps a warehouse at peak efficiency and safety.

We referred to sustainability as the final official ‘S’ of the 5S Methodology because many people consider the 6S Methodology with the addition of a sixth ‘S’ – SAFETY. It’s a great idea, but the truth is, safety should be part of EVERYTHING we do! That’s precisely why we cover it each week!
